Jackson Flora Signed On July 18 And Threw His First Professional Pitch On September 4
The fourth pick in the draft got one inning at Fresno on Friday night. Twenty-eight pitches, fourteen of them strikes, three of the five hitters taking him to a full count.
Jackson Flora's professional career is twenty-eight pitches long.
Fourteen of them were strikes. Fourteen were balls. He threw them Friday night at Chukchansi Park in Fresno, starting a California League game for the Class A San Jose Giants, and when the inning ended he had faced five hitters, given up one hit and one walk, struck out two and allowed no runs. San Jose won 8-5 in ten innings. Flora was the first of the six pitchers they used.
He is the fourth player taken in this year's draft.
The line looks tidy and the inning was not. Ashly Andujar led off, ran the count full, and was caught looking. Carlos Renzullo also went to three and two, six more pitches, and popped out to Josuar Gonzalez at shortstop. Two outs, twelve pitches. Cristian Arguelles then hit a ground ball to right field that went for a double, Daniel Jackson walked on six, and Ronny Ugarte struck out swinging on a ball that got past the catcher. Three of the five men Flora faced took him to a full count.
Half of twenty-eight is not a number anybody puts on a poster. It is also the entire professional record of the highest pick this organization has made since 2018, so it is the number available.
The calendar is the part worth reading twice.
San Francisco signed Flora on July 18 for a bonus of $7,997,500, which is $990,900 under the slot value attached to the fourth pick, and assigned him to the Arizona Complex League the same day. The complex league activated him on July 29. He did not pitch there. The league's transaction log records the signature, the assignment, the activation, and then nothing at all about him until September 1, when the Giants sent him to San Jose. He threw his first pitch three days after that, with two games left in San Jose's regular season.
Forty-eight days from signature to mound, thirty-seven of them after he was cleared to work.
Ali Thanawalla of NBC Sports Bay Area gave the reason on Friday night and it is the boring one: Flora threw 102 innings for UC Santa Barbara this spring, and the club is being careful with him. Flora told Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle much the same thing. "I'm not quite built up to go seven or eight innings yet, but just kind of continuing to learn how to pitch in the professional strike zone versus a college one." Rubin had his fastball at 98, and reported that Baseball America ranks him the fiftieth prospect in the sport.
Thirty players were taken in the first round of the 2026 draft. Eighteen of them have now appeared in a professional game, and Flora is last among the eighteen with one. Cameron Flukey has four. Trevor Condon has seven, Tyler Spangler eight. Roch Cholowsky went first overall and has nine at High-A (a level above San Jose, so his nine and Flora's one are not the same rung). Grady Emerson went second and has eleven. Vahn Lackey went third and has twenty-three across two levels. The other twelve first-rounders have not appeared anywhere at all, which is the group Flora was in on Thursday.
So he is behind every first-rounder who has started and ahead of every one who has not. That is a sentence that sounds like nothing, and it is close to the whole plan.
The organization that decided all this is 58-84 through 142 games. It has been eliminated from the National League West, it sits sixteen and a half games out of a wild card with a wild-card elimination number of five, and on the same night Flora threw his twenty-eight pitches, the major league club lost 6-10 at the Mets. Twenty games remain up there and none of them decide anything.
San Francisco has picked in the top five of the draft three times since 2000. Buster Posey went fifth in 2008. Joey Bart went second in 2018. Flora went fourth this year. Two catchers and a right-handed pitcher, and the two catchers went about as differently as two careers can go, which is the honest thing to say about a sample of two and the reason nobody should read anything into the slot itself.
A Called Shot on the ledger, filed August 15, says Flora does not appear in a game above High-A at any point in the 2027 minor league season. It is open. Nothing that happened Friday moves it, because one inning at Class A in September is exactly what a club does with an arm it intends to bring along slowly, and it is also exactly what a club does with an arm it intends to push. The difference shows up next April.
San Jose plays at Fresno on Saturday and again on Sunday, and then the regular season is over. The league's schedule then shows San Jose at an opponent it has not named on September 8, and at home on the 10th and the 11th. That is the postseason, and San Jose is in it at 78-52, a division winner by nine games.
Whether Flora throws again this year is a question about how many innings the organization believes he has left. It answered that question once already this summer, over forty-eight days, by letting him throw none.
