Michigan Landed In Lithuania And Lost Its Fifth-Year Guard The Same Day

The Tenth Circuit stayed the injunction that had given the high school class of 2022 an extra season, 2 to 1, on August 21. That was the day Michigan's plane reached Vilnius. Roddy Gayle Jr. is the only Michigan player the ruling touches, and it takes 21.1 minutes a night off the table before the team has played a possession.

Every call on this site goes on a public ledger and gets graded. The misses stay up.
An editorial illustration, not a photograph: a maize arc sweeps from the lower left of the frame to the upper right and ends in a filled navy circle where it lands, while a second navy circle sits alone at the lower left, far behind the start of the arc and joined to nothing.

Michigan's traveling party reached Lithuania on August 21. In Denver that same day, three judges took away the extra season that would have let Roddy Gayle Jr. follow it.

The Tenth Circuit stayed Judge Charlotte Sweeney's July 31 preliminary injunction while the NCAA's appeal proceeds. Sweeney had certified a nationwide class: athletes who began college sports in 2022-23, competed in Division I, finished four years of eligibility by the end of 2025-26, and were barred from a fifth season by the NCAA's new five-year rule. The order came from Judges Timothy Tymkovich, Paul Kelly and Veronica Rossman, and it did not explain itself. Tymkovich and Kelly found the NCAA had "satisfied its burden" on likelihood of success and irreparable injury, and froze her order. Rossman would have denied the stay. The vote was 2 to 1, which is not a merits ruling and is not unanimous, and both of those are worth holding onto.

The stay reaches the injunction and nothing else. Class certification stands and the appeal has not been decided. What changed is the status of every athlete the injunction had made eligible. Scott Bearby, the NCAA's chief legal officer, put it plainly: they "are no longer eligible to compete," and Division I can "return to the status quo before the district court intervened." The names that surfaced publicly were football players, among them Arizona running back Ismail Mahdi.

At Michigan the name is Gayle, and per UM Hoops he is the only player the class covers. He appeared in 39 of Michigan's 40 games last season at 21.1 minutes a night, 7.3 points and 1.3 assists, on the team that beat UConn 69-63 in Indianapolis on April 6 for the national championship. That is not a starter and it is not a freshman. It is the experienced substitute a rotation leans on in February, and on Friday it went off the board.

There was already a second lock on the door#

Sweeney clarified her own order on August 2, and the clarification is the half that has always mattered here. She left the NCAA's transfer rules in force: a class member who had not entered the portal during his sport's window could not move to a new school, though he could return to his old one. Michigan was the only door Gayle could walk through. The same clarification, per an August 5 analysis by Kutak Rock, barred two groups from returning at all: class members over 24, and class members with professional contracts.

Gayle went undrafted in June and signed an Exhibit 10 with the Detroit Pistons, a one-year minimum-salary NBA deal a team can convert to a two-way before the season starts. Whether that clause reaches an Exhibit 10 is the open question, and the published reading runs the other way from the clarification: an Exhibit 10 does not take effect until the player appears in an NBA game, which is the argument reported all summer for why Gayle's college option survived his signature. No court has adopted it, and Friday's order did not take it up. The panel stayed an injunction; it did not construe the clarification. The question is still open, and for now it is also academic, because a stayed injunction leaves no fifth year for a professional contract to disqualify anyone from.

Mike Boynton was asked about Gayle on August 18, three days before the ruling. "Under these circumstances, I don't know exactly what it all means," he said, and then said the part a coach controls: "If there's an opportunity for Roddy to be back and he wants to be back, we will certainly have him back."

The opportunity closed on Friday.

The guard question is a basketball question again#

Michigan plays the Lithuanian men's national team on August 23, the Lithuania B team on August 24, and Mega Superbet on August 27 in Croatia. The trip also buys ten extra preseason practices, which is the real prize and the reason programs take these trips.

Set the discount out loud. These are exhibitions against a senior national team and two professional clubs, they count in nobody's record, and a number put up against a Lithuanian club is not a number put up against the Big Ten. What three games can honestly show is minutes and roles: who starts, who closes, and who has the ball when Elliot Cadeau sits down.

Cadeau played all 40 games last season at 27.3 minutes, 10.5 points and 5.9 assists. Trey McKenney played all 40 at 22.1 minutes and 9.9 points. Boynton was asked about the two of them calling themselves the best backcourt in the country and did not talk them down: "I hope they feel that way. I want them to play that way."

Behind those two the record thins to almost nothing. Boynton's most concrete remark about a freshman guard was that if Brandon McCoy Jr. "gets some runway, I'd be shocked if he doesn't have at least a dunk in every game." A dunk is not a rotation. Gayle's 21.1 minutes a night have to be paid to somebody, and most of them now go to players with no college record at Michigan. Three exhibitions is the whole sample before the opener, and Jalen Reed will not play in them, so the frontcourt answers arrive on a shorter clock still.

What has to happen, and by when#

The merits appeal is live and there is no public argument date. Unless the Tenth Circuit rules for the plaintiffs before November 3, the stay is what governs when Michigan opens against Oakland at Crisler.

One route around it is already running. A Louisiana judge granted a temporary restraining order on August 19 covering nearly three dozen athletes, 16 of them football players, several of them under professional contracts. That order sits in a different circuit, Friday's stay did not touch it, and it shows that individual relief elsewhere can still reach an athlete who signed a professional deal. Gayle is not part of it.

This byline has a call on the ledger: Gayle is not listed on Michigan's official 2026-27 roster at MGoBlue.com on November 3. Friday made that call more likely, and the honest time to say so is now rather than in November. Two things would beat it: the merits ruling landing early and landing for the plaintiffs, or Gayle finding his own order in his own court.

For now Michigan has not published a 2026-27 roster at all. The newest one on the official site is 2025-26, and Gayle is still on it.

The three games were announced on May 18 by Dusty May, who was gone before the plane left, to buy ten practices and a long look at a new roster. They are now the only look anyone gets at a backcourt that lost its most experienced substitute on the day it landed.

Correction, 2026-09-17

Michigan's 2026-27 season opener against Oakland at Crisler Center is Monday, November 2, 2026, not November 3. Michigan Athletics' own non-conference schedule release of September 4, 2026 states the date in prose, and the official 2026-27 schedule page carries it; both supersede the Detroit News report of July 11, 2026 that this piece was written from. The date appears twice, once as the point by which the Tenth Circuit would have to rule for the stay to stop governing, and once in the restatement of this site's open call on Michigan's roster. Both read November 2. Neither argument changes.

Michigan's One Tour Win Came On A Night Mega Superbet Missed Twenty-Six Threes

Michigan beat KK Mega Superbet 84-81 on August 27 in Igalo, Montenegro, to close its European tour 1-2. Both teams attempted exactly thirty-two three-pointers; Michigan made twelve and Mega made six. The three scoring columns reconcile to the margin exactly: Michigan won the three-point column by eighteen points, lost the two-point column by six (sixteen of twenty-six against nineteen of thirty-five) and lost the free-throw column by nine (sixteen of twenty-eight against twenty-five of thirty-three). Michigan shot 48.3 percent overall and held Mega to 37.3 percent, and outrebounded the club 41-35. Michigan also made twelve threes in the tour opener and lost that game by twelve, so the difference in Igalo was Mega's 18.8 percent from the arc rather than Michigan's 37.5. Trey McKenney scored a game-high 25 points on nine-of-sixteen shooting with seven rebounds; he and Elliot Cadeau scored 19 of Michigan's 22 fourth-quarter points, including a 13-0 run that turned a three-point deficit into a 77-67 lead. Cadeau had 15 points in just over seventeen minutes in foul trouble, going seven of nine from the line. J.P. Estrella scored 16 on seven-of-eleven shooting and fouled out in sixteen minutes. Michigan lost the first half 49-38 and won the second half 46-32. The Wolverines committed 21 turnovers, their third straight tour game in double figures, and blocked no shots. Brandon McCoy Jr. started and lasted one minute: about twenty seconds in he slipped driving in transition, his right leg rolling underneath him, and he was carried to the locker room without putting weight on it, per the Detroit News and 247Sports. He does not appear anywhere in Michigan's published account of the game, and the program has said only that he will continue to be evaluated. Michigan scored 245 points across the three games to its opponents' 259, and took 105 of its 199 field-goal attempts from behind the arc.

J.P. Estrella Played Thirty-Five Of Forty Minutes For A Michigan Team Down To Eight

Michigan lost the second game of its European tour 82-77 to Lithuania's National B Team on August 24 in Utena, a day after losing 96-84 to the Lithuania senior national team in Vilnius. Michigan's box score listed ten players and Michigan used eight, with Moustapha Thiam, Trey McKenney and Ricky Liburd all resting nagging injuries as a precaution and Lincoln Cosby and Jalen Reed still rehabbing. Four Wolverines played more than thirty-one minutes after none had reached thirty-one the previous night: J.P. Estrella 35:34, Quinn Costello 34:34, Oscar Goodman 32:04, Brandon McCoy Jr. 31:06. Michigan's reserves scored seven points on three-of-twelve shooting in 44:33, against forty bench points on Sunday, though Costello and Goodman had both come off the bench in Vilnius and started here. Michigan attempted forty-three three-pointers and thirty-three two-pointers, making eleven and seventeen. The Wolverines scored ten points in the third quarter and led 47-46 at halftime. Elliot Cadeau had nineteen points and eight assists in 22:09. Michigan closes the tour against Mega SUPERBET in Dubrovnik on August 27.

Michigan Lost Three Starters To Fouls And The Ball Twenty-Seven Times

Michigan opened its European tour with a 96-84 exhibition loss to the Lithuania senior national team at Arena Vilnius on August 23. The Wolverines led 56-44 at halftime and by fourteen early in the third quarter, then were outscored 52-28 after the break. Michigan committed 27 turnovers and 28 fouls. Trey McKenney, Elliot Cadeau and J.P. Estrella each committed a fifth personal foul, left the floor at it and did not return, all three inside the last eight minutes. Quinn Costello led Michigan with 17 points on five three-pointers off the bench in 27:45, second on the team in minutes. Joseph Hartman played 20:58 with five assists and finished the game at point guard. Michigan's bench played 105:10 to the starters' 94:50. Azuolas Tubelis, who played three seasons at Arizona, scored 31 points on 12-of-15 shooting for Lithuania. Michigan plays the Lithuania B Team on August 24 in Utena and Mega SUPERBET on August 27 in Dubrovnik.

On the record

Called Shots →
Held upAug 24, 2026

Across the three games of Michigan's European tour, Quinn Costello attempts more three-pointers than any other Michigan player.

Costello took nine of Michigan's thirty three-point attempts in game one, off the bench, made five, led the team with 17 points and played the second-most minutes on the roster while recording no assists and no turnovers. That is a shooting specialist's usage pattern, and the question this call asks is whether it was the job or the night. The case for it: a coach who wants the floor spread around Elliot Cadeau needs somebody whose only instruction is to shoot, and Costello was given 27:45 to do exactly that. What makes it losable: nine attempts is one game, Trey McKenney took six and made three, the sample is three exhibitions in five days, and a freshman who shoots five-of-nine on Sunday can shoot two-of-eight on Thursday and see the leash shorten. Rotations in August are also deliberately unstable, which is the whole reason the games are being played.

Michigan's roster is full at fifteen, and the two guards it wants are outside it

Michigan's official 2026-27 roster listed fifteen players on Saturday morning. The cumulative statistics sheet from the European tour lists the same fifteen. Kenny Noland, the Columbia transfer Michigan signed on August 19, is on neither, and neither is Roddy Gayle Jr., who has held a temporary restraining order since September 2. The Niagara County docket carried no decision on Gayle's injunction motion as of Saturday morning, two days after the hearing was scheduled.

Roddy Gayle's reply brief was due Monday and the docket ends on September 11

Roddy Gayle Jr.'s reply brief in support of his preliminary injunction motion was due September 14. As of Thursday morning the Niagara County Supreme Court docket, Index No. E192685/2026, runs to 43 documents and contains no reply of any kind; the last filing by either side is an acknowledgement of service entered September 11. Justice Frank A. Sedita III was scheduled to hear the motion Thursday at 2 p.m. Eastern. Separately, Michigan's published 2026-27 roster still lists fifteen players, which is the men's basketball roster limit under NCAA Bylaw 17.2, and the adopted rule says a school at the limit may not add anyone once its roster is submitted. The one published door is an exception for a player injured before the submission date, and Michigan has a player in that position.

Michigan's Big Ten schedule looks even, until you read the last three weeks

Michigan's 20-game Big Ten schedule, released September 16, runs from December 9 at Rutgers to March 7 at Ohio State: ten home games, ten road games. The three opponents Michigan plays twice are Minnesota, Michigan State and Ohio State, and in all three pairs the home game comes first and the road game falls between February 16 and March 7. Four of the last six conference games are away from Ann Arbor. Last season Michigan went 10-0 in Big Ten road games and lost once at home.

The NCAA Has Asked Niagara County To Dissolve The Order That Makes Roddy Gayle Eligible

The NCAA answered Roddy Gayle Jr. on September 9 with a memorandum of law asking Niagara County Supreme Court to deny his preliminary injunction and vacate the September 2 temporary restraining order. Its case is built on New York law rather than on basketball: Martin v. Curran, a 1972 Monroe County decision holding that an athlete derives no rights from an association's bylaws, and the argument that Education Law section 6438-c creates no private right of action. The same day, a federal judge in West Virginia denied fourteen Class of 2022 athletes the same relief, but on a West Virginia statute New York does not have. Gayle's reply brief is due September 14 and the hearing is September 17. Michigan's published roster is still fifteen players and still does not include him.

Roddy Gayle Is Eligible Until September 17 And Michigan's Roster Is Already Full

Roddy Gayle Jr. sued the NCAA in Niagara County Supreme Court on August 31 and won a temporary restraining order on September 2, twelve days after the Tenth Circuit took away the class ruling that had made him eligible. The order bars the NCAA from declaring him ineligible and from punishing Michigan for playing him, and it runs until a preliminary injunction hearing on September 17 at 2 p.m. Michigan announced its non-conference schedule on September 4: three exhibitions in October and an opener against Oakland on November 2. Its published 2026-27 roster lists fifteen players, which is the roster limit, and Gayle is not one of them.
