Ryan Lin, the deep dive: a 5-11 D who played 26 minutes a night and his own comp is Quinn Hughes
You already know the one-line knock on Lin: terrific everywhere, but he is about 5-11 and 176 pounds, so he slid. So the most useful new information is the stuff that shows he played nothing like a small player, and that the defenseman he is most often compared to is actually smaller than he is. I verified the numbers, because the usage figure in particular is the whole argument.
The usage demolishes the only criticism#

A 5-11 defenseman eating 26 minutes a night and leading the entire WHL blue line in scoring, on a team that finished last in its division, is the opposite of a player held back by his size. When the only criticism is "small," and the player answers it by being the most-used and most-productive defenseman in his league, you listen to the tape, not the tape measure.
Two straight 50-point seasons, and a stamp at Worlds#
This is not a one-year wonder. He went 53 points (5 goals, 48 assists) at 16, then 57 points (14 goals, 43 assists) in 53 games at 17, back-to-back 50-point seasons as a teenage defenseman, nearly tripling his goals while keeping the elite assist base. Then he led every defenseman at the 2026 U18 World Championship in scoring (6 points in 5 games) and won gold with Canada. Best-on-best, against his age group, he was the top blueliner on the ice.
The comp that matters most is his own#
The scouting comps all cluster on the same archetype, smart, mobile, two-way defensemen who beat the size question. NHL.com and scouts land on Quinn Hughes (the mobile, escape-artist, one-man-breakout game) and Drew Doughty (the two-way IQ and all-situations tenacity), with MacKenzie Weegar and Rasmus Sandin as the grounded floor comps. And Lin picked his own: Quinn Hughes, fittingly, since he is a Richmond kid who watches every Canucks game. Here is the wrinkle that should quiet the size worry: Hughes is 5-10, actually smaller than Lin, and he became a Norris Trophy winner. Lin is not even as small as the elite player he is chasing.
The honest counterweight (no glow)#
- He is genuinely small and needs strength. The Hughes or Doughty outcome is the dream; the floor risk is the size caps him at a third pair. He has to add weight to handle NHL men.
- The shot is his one ordinary tool (Elite Prospects graded it his lowest), and the lone skating nuance scouts flag is straight-line top speed, even though his edges, pivots, and footwork are high-end. His edge is brains and efficiency, not raw explosiveness.
- Pronman is the skeptic (a B-minus, a Sandin comp, a No. 4 or 5 projection) against Wheeler and Professor Hockey calling him a favorite of the class. The truth is likely in between: a high-probability top-four brain whose ceiling rides on whether the size and shot let those brains play up the lineup.
What it means for the Sharks#
Lin is the second right-shot defenseman of the future, and he is the perfect complement to Verhoeff: Verhoeff has the size and the shot with skating and IQ questions; Lin has the IQ and the mobility with size and shot questions. They cover each other's holes. He is off to the University of Denver to play for David Carle, one of the best coaches outside the NHL, will need a year or two of college and likely some Barracuda time, and projects to arrive on a cheap entry-level deal right as the window opens around 2028-29. Like Verhoeff, a future piece, not a 2026-27 fix, and another reason to bridge the right side short-term rather than pay long money now.
The thing you did not know is how hard Lin's own play argues against the only thing wrong with him. A 5-11 defenseman does not get to play 26 minutes a night and lead an entire major junior league in scoring on a last-place team unless he is special, and the player he models himself on, and gets compared to, is smaller than he is and won a Norris. The size is a real risk and the shot is ordinary, so this is not a slam dunk. But getting the draft's smartest defenseman at 21, with a Quinn Hughes blueprint and the work ethic to chase it, is exactly the kind of bet a deep pipeline can afford to make. Wheeler and Professor Hockey called him their favorite of the class for a reason.
