The Grier report card: four years graded, one pattern found, and what it predicts for June 27
Mocks predict drafts by guessing what teams should do. Behavioral profiles predict them by looking at what the man has actually done, over and over, when nobody was watching closely. So here is four years of Mike Grier, every consequential move graded with hindsight, pattern-hunted, and converted into testable predictions for June 27 and July 1. The headline finding is that Grier has a signature move, he has run it at least four times, and almost nobody talks about it.
1. The signature: the asset laundromat#
Watch the chains, verified from the transaction log:
- Karlsson became Dickinson AND Ravensbergen. The 2023 Karlsson trade returned Granlund, Rutta, Hoffman, and Pittsburgh's 2024 first. The first (No. 14) got packaged with a second to trade up to No. 11, which is Sam Dickinson. Then Granlund, plus Cody Ceci, went to Dallas for the 2025 first that became Joshua Ravensbergen. One aging superstar in, the No. 2 defense prospect and the No. 1 goalie prospect out, with two intermediate stops.
- The Emberson chain started on the waiver wire. Claimed Ty Emberson for free, traded him to Edmonton for Ceci plus a third, and Ceci rode the Granlund deal into the Ravensbergen pick. A free waiver claim is now part-owner of the franchise's goalie of the future.
- Detroit paid him to take Walman, and then Edmonton paid him a first to have him. Acquired Walman WITH a second-round sweetener in 2024, flipped him for the conditional first that is now the No. 20 pick in this draft. Both ends of the same player, profitable.
- The Blackwood dump-flip: sold a goalie he did not need to Colorado for a package headlined by a second. Plus the Liljegren-for-a-fourth exit on a UFA he was never re-signing: "We just thought it was good value." That quote is the whole personality.
The pattern in one sentence: distressed assets in, draft capital out, and never hold a depreciating veteran to expiry. Remember that sentence when we get to Toffoli's March rule, because the laundromat says Grier already thinks this way.

3. The two rules hiding in the card#
Rule one: forwards get term, defensemen get two years, no exceptions yet. Toffoli got four years. Sherwood got five. Wennberg got three. Meanwhile the longest contract Grier has ever given a defenseman is Orlov's two, and every other D add was a one-year flier, a reclamation, or a fifth-round-pick scavenge. He fundamentally does not trust long veteran-D money, which his own UFA-D grades say is self-aware.
Rule two: the weakness is real, and our plan leans on it. His one failing category is signing free-agent defensemen, and the blue-line plan's anchor move is... signing a free-agent defenseman. The mitigation is that Carlson at two years is structurally the opposite of the Klingberg-Orlov mistakes (those were bets on bounce-backs; Carlson is a bet on a established level continuing for 24 more months), but honesty requires the flag: we are asking the GM to win at the one table where he has lost twice.
4. What the profile predicts, testably#

The verdict#
Overall: A-minus as an asset manager, D as a free-agent defense shopper, and incomplete at the thing that comes next.
Four years in, Grier has been close to flawless at the rebuild's core competency: converting yesterday's roster into tomorrow's, often twice over, frequently starting from the waiver wire. The draft record beyond the lottery gimmes is genuinely strong, the extension instincts are early and team-friendly, and the one consistent failure (veteran defensemen in July) is a known, bounded flaw he seems to manage by refusing to give the position term. The honest open question is the one no chain can answer: tearing down and accumulating is a different job from the one that starts now, spending from a position of strength with a contender's clock running. The first evidence arrives June 27, and for once we have written down in advance exactly what his own history says he will do. If he deviates, that itself will be the most interesting data point in four years.
